Arrival

There is NO shuttle bus from Arlanda to Tällberg on Sunday (there is one back from the conference venue on Friday 18th 14:00). If you arrive at Arlanda Airport please take the train from  Arlanda C (NOT the Arlanda express station) located at Sky City between Terminal 4 and 5. The ticket counter there is manned until 20:30, so even with the latest train you will be able to buy a ticket. Nevertheless, reservations via the web (www.sj.se) are recommended, otherwise you might have to stand if trains are crowded. If you arrive by train or another airport, please check below for details.

If you arrive at Sunday 13th, you will be picked you up at Tällberg station by the minibus of the LOC or the monibus owned by Siljans taxi (we and they know all arrival times and will be there at any, even the last at 23:07). . You do not need to make any further arrangements and we will even pick up people coming with the latest train. Tällberg station is very small, so the chance to get lost are really vanishingly small.

If you come earlier (Saturday or before), please arrange pick-up with Hotel Dalecarlia.

Tällberg

Tällberg is a little picturesque village located in the heart of Sweden. It is situated on the shore of Lake Siljan, in the northern part of Leksand, a municipality in the county of Dalecarlia. All the houses and buildings are made of wood, such as timber or log.

The village has about 200 permanent residents and a further 600 people have holiday cottages. There are eight hotels in this little village, most of high International standard and altogether over 1.000 hotel beds. More than half a million people visit Tällberg each year. A plan of Tällberg can be downloaded here. More...

Lake Siljan (Wikipedia)

http://egc2008.eu/en/leksand/facts.php

Siljan, in Dalarna in central Sweden, is Sweden's sixth largest lake. The cumulative area of Siljan and the adjacent, smaller lakes Orsasjön and Insjön is 354 km². Siljan reaches a maximum depth of 120 m, and its surface is situated 161 metres above sea level. The largest city bordered by its shore is Mora.

The lake is located around the southwestern perimeter of the Siljansringen (Siljan Ring), a circular geological formation which was formed 377 million years ago in the Devonian by a major meteorite impact. The original crater, now mostly eroded, is estimated to have been about 52 km (32 mi) in diameter and is the largest known impact crater in Europe (excluding Russia).[1] The Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian sedimentary rocks deformed by the impact are rich in fossils.

Some people suspect that there might be oil in the area, but drilling has been unsuccessful so far. There are large deposits of lead and zinc in the Boda area.

Venue

The conference will be held at Hotel Dalecarlia, Tällgårdsgattu 21,  SE-79370, Tällberg, Sweden, phone: ++46-247-89100, fax   ++46-247-50240, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The hotel is nicely situated  on a hillside with very wide view over the Siljan lake. It has a spa (pool, bubblepool and sauna free for our guests) and offers free wireless internet access. Keynote speakers will live in single rooms and students and early career scientists in double rooms. A limited number of single rooms are available also for the latter against payment of a supplementary fee. Rooms are equipped with private bathroom, shower, toilet, hairdryer and TV.

Meals will be in the dining hall, in the case of un-Swedish summer weather (warm and dry) lunches will be at the terrace overlooking Lake Siljan. There is a bar at the hotel.

Hotel Dalecarlia was originally named Tällgården and built in 1910 by professor Gösta Mittag-Leffler. That year15 ha farming area belonged to the mansion. The professor donated 1 million crowns (at this time a gigantic sum) to the Academy of Sciences. In his will he stated that the property should be donated to Stockholm High School (the predecessor of Stockholm University)  as a holiday home. Due to lack of interest by the university bigwigs it was sold and changed hands several times. 1944 it became a hotel and 1978 and 1989 it went through a thorough renovation.

Hotel Dalecarlia

Prof. Mittag-Leffler founded the Nordic Institute of Mathematics and the Acta Mathematica and  was a personal friend of King Oscar II. He is further reported to have had a non-Platonic relationship with Alfred Nobel's girlfriend. Rumor has it that the reason why we have no Nobel Prize in mathematics is that Nobel could not bear the thought that Mittag-Leffler might win it. The credibility of this story is, nowadays, very strongly contested.

Access

General

Participants are requested to travel to the conferenceon their own. At the end of the conference (14:00 on Friday 18th), we will provide a shuttle bus from the conference venue to Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station.  Travel time to  Arlanda will be about 3-3.5 hours, to Stockholm 3.5-4 hours. There is NO shuttle bus from Arlanda to Tällberg on Sunday, please take the train from Arlanda C (NOT Arlanda Express !) to Tällberg, we will fetch you from the railway station.

By air

The best airport to go to Tällberg is Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), where most international flights arrive and depart, since it is conveniently located in the north of Stockholm and has an own railway station. However Stockholm, not unlike London and New York, boasts three additional airports: Stockholm Skavsta (NYO) with a lot of budget airlines flying to and from, Stockholm Västerås (VST) and Stockholm Bromma (BMA).  The latter airports are only served by very few international flights. Flying into Skavsta will, however, get you to the wrong (southern) side of Stockholm and add 2 hours to your travel time and around SEK 200 to your ticket prices each way.

At Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) go to the railway station (Arlanda C, and NOT the Arlanda Express station). The railway station is located in "Sky City" between terminal 4 (domestic flights) and 5. From there take the train to Tällberg via Borlänge. During daytime there are train connections about every 2 hours and travel time amounts to around 3 hours.  Although there are two direct trains, you will have to change at Borlänge in most cases (not a big deal). For information on timetables check the website of the Swedish State Railways or the excellent timetable of the German railways timetable information (throughout Europe in 9 languages). Put in "Arlanda C" as place of departure and "Tällberg station" as final station. See below for details about ticket purchase.

Arriving at Stockholm Västerås (VST) take the shuttle taxi to Västerås Central station. From there you can take the train via Sala and Borlänge to Tällberg.  For information on timetables check the website of the Swedish State Railways or the excellent timetable of the German railways timetable information (throughout Europe in 9 languages). Put in "Västerås C" as place of departure and "Tällberg station" as final station. See below for details about ticket purchase. In case of bad connections take one of the the flight buses (flygbussarna) to Stockholm Central station (Stockholm C) and from there by train via Borlänge to Tällberg (see below for details). Please note that you cannot pay in cash at these buses, but there are vending machines or/and ticket stalls in the arrival halls. These buses have the train station as final destination and stop at a building adjacent to the railway station.

From other airports take first the flight buses (flygbussarna) to Stockholm Central Station. These buses have the train station as final destination and stop at a building adjacent to the railway station. Please note that you cannot pay in cash at these buses, but there are vending machines or/and ticket stalls in the arrival halls. Travel time is around 20 minutes from Bromma airport and 80 minutes from Skavsta. From there travel on by train via Borlänge to Tällberg (see below for details).

There are small airports around Tällberg also, namely Mora and Borlänge Dala airport, but very few flights go there. Due to high railway prices and long travels, flights to those airports might be an option for people living in Southern Sweden (Göteborg, Malmö) . If you change to a domestic flight to one of this airports at Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg, you have to go through customs (and, if appicable) border control at the airport you are entering Sweden and proceed to the domestic airport (Terminal 4 at Arlanda). Sometimes travellers are asked to pick up their luggage at Stockholm or Göteborg, go through Customs and check it in at the domestic airports.

From  Mora and Borlänge airport take a taxi to the respective railway station and from there a train to Tällberg. In Borlänge you can take bus 601 to the railway station. A timetable of this connection can be found here.

By train

Most travellers coming by train to Sweden will go via Stockholm Central station. Arlanda Airport has an own railway station (located at Sky City between terminal 4 and 5) from which you can go to Tällberg (some direct trains exist). From Arlanda and Stockholm C there are trains to Tällberg during daytime every 2 hours. Tickets should be bought in advance at the vending machines in the Central Hall or at the ticket office (marked "Biljetter) there. However, if possible it is a good idea to use the vending machines, since tickets bought at the counter or at the conductor in the train can be more expensive due to a handling fee (around SEK 50,-). Tickets can be also bought vie internet at the Swedish State Railways website (might be a good idea, since in case of full trains you might have to stand in case of late ticket purchase).  You then get thae ticket either sent home or can get it from the vending machine with a code. Unfortunately travelling with Swedish State Railways has become somewhat complicated during the years. Some tickets you buy from the web might be personal and you may be asked to provide a piece of identification on the train by ticket inspection. With some trains you might be asked to "check in" on the web before boarding the train. After check-in the tickets are non refundable. The company seems to think : "In order to compete with airlaines, let's make travelling with us as complicated as with them".   Since Tällberg is a very small station and a ticket office does not exist there it is a good idea to buy a return ticket if you do not wish to use the shuttle bus.

Travel time to Tällberg from Stockholm is about 3.5 hours. For information on timetables check the website of the Swedish State Railways or the excellent timetable of the German railways timetable information (throughout Europe in 9 languages).Put in "Tällberg station" as final station.

By boat

Some attendees from Finland, Russia or the Baltic countries might want to travel by boat. Tallink/Silja lines and Viking line operate ferry services from Helsinki, Turku, Riga and Tallinn to Stockholm. However, travels are long (overnight or the whole day) and can be a noisy experience due to binge drinkers (alcohol is slightly cheaper on these boats than on the Scandinavian mainland, but still expensive for most foreigners). Flights might be a faster and even cheaper option. Arriving at the harbour, take one of the shuttle buses to Stockholm Central station and continue by train to Tällberg.

By bus

Bus services to Tällberg are fairly infrequent  and therefore not really an alternative. Line 58 from the local bus company "Dalatrafik" (sometimes !) stops at Tällberg on the way from Borlänge via Leksand to Rättvik. The closest station to Dalecarlia hotel is "Tällberg kiosk". Timetables can be found at the Dalatrafik website.

From Tällberg station to Dalecarlia hotel

The distance from Tällberg station to Dalecarlia hotel is about 2 km (1.5 miles). We will provide shuttle buses for participants on June 13th from Tällberg station to Hotel Dalecarlia. If you come on a different day, please contact the hotel for a pick-up. To walk, turn right at the station house /looking away from the track and towards the direction of Stockholm), cross the railway at the intersection and continue on the road until you reach an intersection with a road called "Perusgattu", near  "Åkerblads hotell" and Klockargården. Parking places are available at the hotel in sufficient number, albeit mostly on gravel. A word of caution: Distances in Sweden are long and frequent (and heavily enforced) speed limits make car travels a rather long and boring affair.
